bpm (Beats per Minute) steady 30 to brutal 300 | 2025

metronome.
Moving the paint mixture across the surface, aligning with the silence between the ticks of a metronome; to specific beats per minute, ranging from 30 BPM to 300 BPM, within the confines of a 2D surface area measuring 100x70cm.
Concepts which are intrinsic to the work:
movement | momentum | inertia | acceleration | infinity | force | friction | resistance | speed | space pressure | weight | intention | action | rhythm | tempo push | pull | repetition | limitation | restriction.
I categorize tempos, ranging from slow to fast, as 'knead', 'stroke', 'sweep', 'slice', 'strike', and 'attack'. In my work, movement and rhythm play crucial roles in sustaining a seamless continuity of tone. Tempo rubato reflects the timing I use to maintain control. But now, working within a strict beat introduces new constraints. As the tempo increases, the way I manipulate paint during pauses starts to align with the rhythm. At 70 bpm, the line between moving in the silence or on the beat begins to blur. At the extreme of 300 bpm, the pace becomes so fast that my attention shifts entirely to maintaining stability, consistent pressure in my movements, and the physical endurance to complete the painting.
